As a longtime driver of old (really old) cars, we have kept vehicle expenses down through the years--approximately $220/mo plus insurance to own and maintain three cars, all early to mid-1990's--but the unpredictable breakdowns and repairs are hard to anticipate and disruptive to our schedules. The inconvenience is mitigated by knowing that our three cars cost us what one new vehicle would cost.
