Unpredictable car expenses

As a longtime driver of old (really old) cars, we have kept vehicle expenses down through the years--approximately $220/mo plus insurance to own and maintain three cars, all early to mid-1990's--but the unpredictable breakdowns and repairs are hard to anticipate and disruptive to our schedules.
