Rick, I applaud your willingness to drive older vehicles rather than "needing" to drive a new vehicle every couple of years. One thing to consider to help overcome those unexpected auto challenges, if your budget would allow it, would be to put a little extra aside every month in your auto category for maintenance or replacement. That way it is available when you need it and you don't have to scrimp in other areas as much or go into debt when those costs arise.
